Halloween in the Area
Halloween is almost upon us and Albany, NY and all of the Capital Region is filled with spooky tours, ghost walks, and haunted hay rides. The Capitol Haunted Tour is a highlight of the October wealth of frights. More than the seat of government, the Capitol is host to many stories and rich history.
My husband and I took the tour on a bright, sunny day and felt the creepy delights even at 1pm. It’s a long tour (good!) because there are so many stories that our Guide must tell. I hate to give away any of the stories but I will say that they are filled with murder, Abraham Lincoln, and The Great Fire of 1911. There’s even a tie to Native American lore. I loved every minute of the tour- a knowledgeable guide, curious audience, and goosebumps made for a pleasant 90+ minutes.
Architecture of the Capitol
The chills you feel at the Capitol may owe, in part, to the chill in the air- it’s a cool building that feels like a castle. Built in varying styles, the overall look isn’t classical but Medieval, Romanesque, Victorian, and even a little Gothic in some corners.
Take a look at some of the things that took our breath away:
Million Dollar Staircase
Immensely expensive in its time, the million dollar staircase is a wonder of red stone. It is vibrant and beautiful, with delicate lighting. The carvings reveal dozens of hidden faces as well. You can lose yourself staring. But be careful- no bannister!
The Capitol Has Harry Potter-esque Elements
Since it looks like a castle, there were moments on the tour I had visions of Hogwarts. The carvings, hidden nooks, and the library are all reminiscent of Hogwarts.
The Capitol Haunted Tour
While I didn’t see a ghost, we experienced some of the rich and slightly terrifying highlights of Albany, NY history.
